Eligibility
Grants may be made to the following people:
- U.S. citizens and non-citizens, but applicants must adhere to visa regulations and must be able to receive funding through a US bank.
- Students enrolled at tertiary institutions of higher education within the United States or its territories.
- Teachers and faculty teaching at tertiary institutions in the United States or its territories.
- Students and faculty from tertiary institutions outside the United States as long as:
- The parties comply with visa rules (F-1, J-1, etc.)
- NFMLTA reports the grant properly for tax purposes (Forms 1042 and 1042-S for scholarships given to nonresident aliens)
- NFMLTA ensures that the scholarship does not disqualify a student from visa eligibility (e.g., underfunding or inappropriate work benefit)
- Independent researchers with significant experience in world languages, literatures, linguistics, and cultures.
- Students and teachers enrolled in online degree programs at the Masters or Doctoral Level.
- Members of NFMLTA partner organizations and non-members.
- While applicants may apply for as many NFMLTA grants as they wish in a calendar year, they may only receive one grant every two years. Some grants may only be granted once.
Grant Terms
- Grants may not be carried over from one calendar year to another.
- Grant recipients must submit all required reimbursement documentation by the end of the calendar year or forfeit their grant.
- Grantees must be able to fulfill the terms of the grant described in their application or must forfeit their grant. This includes travel authorization and conference attendance. Conference grants are not transferable from one conference to another.
- Applicants who forfeit a grant are invited to apply again immediately.
- Applicants must disclose the use of AI in grant applications, presentations, and other NFMLTA-related communications.
After the Award
For final payment, grant recipients are required to submit a one-page report detailing how the funds are spent, along with final receipts for all reimbursable expenditures.
Awardees of a grant at or above $1000 must acknowledge NFMLTA in any written publication or dissertation supported by the grant.
