National Federation of Modern Language Teachers Associations (NFMLTA) Executive Director Job Announcement
The National Federation of Modern Language Teachers Associations (NFMLTA) is seeking an Executive Director to lead the organization into the next phase of impactful work in language education and language/linguistics research.
About the NFMLTA
Founded in 1916, the NFMLTA supports the expansion and promotion of research on and the improvement of the teaching and learning of modern world languages, literatures, linguistics, and cultures by a variety of activities including but not limited to grants, awards, and the publication of The Modern Language Journal (MLJ).
About the Position
The position of Executive Director of the NFMLTA is a fully remote, part-time position, approximately 10-15 hours per week. Reporting to the NFMLTA Board President, the Executive Director has a variety of responsibilities outlined in four categories:
Functional Operations and Outreach: Oversee professional communications such as website, social media, collection and distribution of grant applications, as well as contact with external vendors and partners such as with Wiley (publisher of the MLJ) and the editors of the MLJ.
Financial Accountability: Working in conjunction with NFMLTA’s outside accountant, the Executive Director manages the organization’s day-to-day finances, ensures financial transparency and accuracy, and ensures that taxes, reviews/audits, and the annual budget are prepared, filed, and communicated to the board of directors.
Program Support: The Executive Director will take the lead in promoting and increasing access to signature NFMLTA initiatives like The Modern Language Journal, our research and presentation grants, as well as NFMLTA-sponsored awards.
Organizational Governance/Volunteer Management: The Executive Director will support the Board of Directors by providing logistical support to governance structures of the NFMLTA such as the board, executive committee, and standing committees. This includes organizing and attending the annual meeting of the board (currently in-person) and maintaining the governance records of the organization. Candidates should consult the bylaws of the organization for full details.
The position is compensated with an annual stipend of $25,000, paid monthly as a 1099 consultant. The position carries no benefits. Qualified candidates must be based in the US.
NFMLTA’s Executive Director should have the following qualities/attributes:
- Knowledge of the educational landscape of language learning and teaching in the US
- Effective communicator and relationship-builder
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize and multitask
- Flexibility and a willingness to learn new things
- Previous association or nonprofit management experience (preferred)
